How to Convert a Salary to an Hourly Rate
Hourly rate = salary ÷ hours worked in a year. A full-time year of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so the quick version is: divide a salary by 2,080, or multiply an hourly wage by 2,080. $60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour, and $25 an hour is $52,000 a year.
Change the hours or weeks above if your schedule is different. Two unpaid weeks turn 2,080 hours into 2,000, and a 37.5-hour week turns it into 1,950, which raises the hourly value of the same salary.
Hourly wage to yearly salary
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, before taxes. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour; many states set a higher one.

What each income affords
The hourly rate is only half the question. Each of these pages works out whether the salary is a good one against BLS earnings data, and how much rent, car and home it covers, including which of the 50 metros in our Home Affordability Index it can buy in:
$30,000 a year$40,000 a year$45,000 a year$50,000 a year$55,000 a year$60,000 a year$65,000 a year$70,000 a year$75,000 a year$80,000 a year$85,000 a year$90,000 a year$100,000 a year$150,000 a year$200,000 a year
For reference, the median full-time worker earned $1,251 a week in the second quarter of 2026, about $65,052 a year (BLS).
What the conversion leaves out
Taxes and deductions. Every figure here is gross pay. Federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, retirement contributions and health premiums all come out before you are paid. For your own take-home pay, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
Overtime. Non-exempt workers must get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a week, so regular overtime raises the yearly total. Many salaried jobs are exempt.
Benefits. Two offers with the same pay can differ a lot in paid time off, health coverage and 401(k) matching. Convert both to the same period first, then compare the benefits line by line.
Frequently asked questions
- Divide the salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so $50,000 a year is $50,000 / 2,080 = $24.04 an hour and $60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour. If you work fewer weeks or different hours, set them in the calculator above.
- Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year, $25 an hour is $52,000 and $30 an hour is $62,400. Part-time hours or unpaid weeks lower the total.
- A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, the figure most employers use. If two weeks a year are unpaid it drops to 2,000 hours. Paid holidays and paid time off still count, because you are paid for them.
- Before taxes. Every figure on this page is gross pay. Take-home pay depends on your state, filing status, retirement contributions and benefits, so we don’t estimate it; the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator works it out from your own paycheck.
- The calculator uses straight-time hours. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, so regular overtime raises annual pay above the figure shown. Many salaried roles are exempt from overtime.
- Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, which is 24 paychecks. The yearly total is the same, but each biweekly check is a little smaller, and two months a year have three paydays.
