Our take: which challenge to pick

Start with the reverse 52-week challenge. It saves the same $1,378 as the classic version, but the big deposits land in January, when the year’s budget is fresh, and the $1 and $2 weeks land in December, when holiday spending makes $52 a week hardest. Because the larger amounts go in first, it also earns about $36.82 at 4% APY, almost twice the $18.84 of the classic order.

The 100 envelope challenge is the most demanding: $5,050 in 100 days is about $354 a week. If that is more than your budget allows, fill two envelopes a week, or use a custom goal in the calculator above. If you are paid every two weeks, a paycheck plan is the easiest to stick with, because the money moves the day it arrives.

Where to keep the money

Put each deposit in a separate, FDIC-insured savings account rather than a jar or envelope. Cash at home earns nothing and isn’t insured if it is lost or stolen, and money in your checking account tends to get spent. The rate matters too: our Savings Rate Gap Index shows what the gap between the national average and a high-yield account costs over 1 to 20 years, and the high-yield savings guide covers what to compare. If the challenge money is your emergency fund, size it first with the emergency fund calculator.

Method and sources

Totals are arithmetic on the stated deposits. Interest assumes each deposit sits in savings from the day it is made until one deposit period after the last one, compounding at a fixed APY. Rates: FDIC national rate for savings, September 2026 (FRED series SNDR); High-yield savings, 4%: Round benchmark, set below the top advertised online high-yield rates (about 4.2%–4.5% APY in mid-October 2026). Real rates change, and a bank may compound and credit interest differently. Custom goals round each deposit to the cent, and the last deposit absorbs the rounding so the total lands on the goal. Dates for the worked examples assume a start on January 1, 2027. Checked October 17, 2026.
